No Gate - Just Show us your Plate!
IU Indianapolis began the transition to Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) in the Spring of 2021.
For the past several decades, IU Indianapolis has distributed rear-view mirror hang tags to students, faculty, and staff to easily identify permissions to park on campus. Starting November 4, students will no longer need to swipe their ST permit to enter the Sports Garage! (student section only.) The Sports Garage is the first step in introducing LPR in all student garages in future phases.
The license plate readers affixed to the entry and exit points will read the license plate for eligibility. Vehicles entering the garage whose license plates are not connected to a valid ST permit will be subject to warnings or citations. Visit your online parking account to ensure your vehicle information is accurate and connected to a valid ST permit.
Here’s what you need to know -
How do I enter the garage if I do not have to swipe my permit?
Just pull in! The reader affixed to the garage will do all the work.
- If your ST permit is active and license plate is registered under that permit in your online account, the reader will recognize your eligibility.
- If your ST permit and/or license plate are not registered in the parking system, you can still enter the garage, but the reader will alert our enforcement team and warnings and/or citations will be issued.
- Make sure to follow the steps below to ensure your information is current in your online account to avoid warnings and citations.
- NOTE: There may be times when the gates will be closed for sporting events or other campus activities, so you will still need to swipe your physical ST permit to enter and exit the garage. So be sure to always keep your ST permit in your vehicle.
Does eligibility change on who can park in the Sports Garage when the gates are up?
No. Just like today, only students having a valid ST permit are eligible to park in this section of the garage. See full eligibility info below.
Eligibility
- Students: Only students with a valid ST parking permit may park in the student section of the Sports G Other student permits (NCS, CH, TGS or BGS) continue to not be valid in this garage.
- Employees: Employees should not park in this garage. There are some exceptions, and employees may check their parking permissions on our website.
- Visitors: Visitors should not park in this garage. The gates will remain down in the visitor section of the garage, and departments are encouraged to remind guests they need to utilize the visitor entrance to avoid citations.
Important Enforcement Reminders
- If your student or employee permit does not allow for parking in this garage, warnings/citations may be placed on your windshield OR emailed to you.
- You may receive an email for your warning/citation and not have a notice on your windshield.
- We will utilize the email address on file with our department (the default email is your IU email address).
- A full listing of our Rules and Regulations can be found here.
All Permit Holders
Although the Sports Garage is the first phase of LPR to not require a permit, LPR has been underway in the surface lots for over a year. Permit holders should ensure their online account information is up to date to avoid any type of warning or citation.
- Ensure your vehicle and license plate information are current in your IU Parking Account.
- Log in to your account. Select LOGIN in the upper right-hand corner.
- Select PERMITS (not VEHICLES) in the upper left-hand corner and click on “View Your Permits”.
- Click on your ‘active’ permit number from the list shown.
- Scroll to the bottom and click “Add Vehicles to Permit” followed by clicking “Add a New Vehicle” on the next screen.
- Enter your plate and update vehicle information and click “Next”.
- If successful, you should see the following message: “Your vehicle has been associated with your permits.”
- If you do not receive this message, please contact the IU Indianapolis Parking & Transportation Office.
- Delete any license plates/vehicles that are no longer valid.
- If your plate number changes, you get a new vehicle, or are using a rental vehicle, you will need to update the plate information.
- Park so your license plate always faces the drive lane. Do not pull through or back into any parking spaces. The only exception to this rule will be for vehicles with a state-issued plate or IU-issued LPR plate mounted on the front bumper. Parking and Transportation Services sells these plates for $14.50.
- Continue to display a valid parking permit until further notice.
- Your IU account may be used to register up to six vehicles (this includes rental vehicles), but only one vehicle may be parked on campus at a time.
